My brother turned 30 on Tuesday and I made him this playlist for his party, which was a success. I think a new career as a DJ is calling.

Currently On Repeat: Cults
Cults opened for Foster the People back in October and since then I've been constantly playing them on my iTunes and now on Spotify. It's not music to take seriously; just fun, upbeat music that is catchy beyond belief. Their debut album "Abducted" has a 1960's pop-rock vibe that will make you daydream about riding a bicycle down some pier in California. Yep, that specific.
Madeline and Brian are a couple that met in NYU that somehow made it work enough to put this band together. Kudos to them. They'll be playing in their home base next week and I'm hoping to go. If you've never heard of them before, definitely listen to Go Outside, Oh My God and my favorite, the cheesiest one on the album, Bumper.

Currently on Repeat: Two Door Cinema Club
Lately I've been pretty unimpressed with the music scene. Maybe it's because I've been to busy to pay attention; but I think if a band is great one way or another their music will reach me.
One band that definitely got to me is Two Door Cinema Club. It's just fun electro pop rock. Hailing from a town I can't even pronounce in Northen Ireland, these geeky looking kids have created an album that, although short, each song is addiciting.

Currently on Repeat: Cage The Elephant
When I feel kinda grimmy and a bit mad I find myself putting on Cage The Elephant. They remind me of my time living in the South. Rock, blues-punk and a lot of attitude. The Kentucky quintent feature two brothers, Matt and Brad Shultz who apparently had no intentions of being rock stars until they realized "it was either that or be a loser."
I'm going to their Brooklyn gig this week and I am pretty stoked. I'm putting on my combat boots, bringing my camera and soaking it all in. I've heard they are great live so I'm excited for this show. I feel like I haven't been to a show in a while (two weeks?lol)!
Below are the lyrics to their single "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked", who was inspired by their drug dealing co-worker who wanted to quit the business but felt he couldn't. Pretty strong lyrics but they are so dead on as to why some people choose the wrong path: desperation.
I was walking down the street,
When out the corner of my eye
I saw a pretty little thing approaching me.
She said "I've never seen a man
Who looks so all alone,
Could you use a little company?
If you can pay the right price
Your evening will be nice,
And you can go and send me on my way."
I said "You're such a sweet young thing
Why you do this to yourself?"
She looked at me and this is what she said:
"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good".
Not even fifteen minutes later
I'm still walking down the street,
When I saw a shadow of a man creep out of sight.
And then he sweeps up from behind
And puts a gun up to my head,
He made it clear he wasn't looking for a fight.
He said "Give me all you've got
I want your money not your life,
But if you try to make a move I won't think twice."
I go like "You can have my cash
But first you know I got to ask
What made you want to live this kind of life?"
He said "There ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know I can't slow down,
I can't hold back,
Though you know, I wish I could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good".
Now a couple hours have passed
And I was sitting at my house,
The day was winding down and coming to an end.
So I turned on the TV
And flipped it over to the news,
And what I saw I almost couldn't comprehend.
I saw a preacher man in cuffs he'd taken money from the church,
He stuffed his bank account with righteous dollar bills.
But even still I can't say much
Because I know we're all the same,
oh yes we all seek out to satisfy those thrills
"Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees.
We got bills to pay,
We got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
I know we can't slow down,
We can't hold back,
Though you know, we wish we could.
No there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good"

Currently on Repeat: La Roux
I can't get enough of English duo La Roux these days. I love the 80's synthpop revival they have going on. Their album is up-beat and will get you off a a seat and onto a dance floor.
The lead singer, Elly Jackson, has such an androgynous look which is very contradictory to her high-pitched feminine voice. I'm assuming the name La Roux must have been influenced by her killer fiery red coif.
They have a show at Webster Hall on 2/11 and I'm hoping to buy tickets soon. It still hasn't sold out but knowing how New York is, it probably will.
Favorite Track: Cover My Eyes
Also, check out their music video for Bullet Proof below:

Currently on Repeat: The XX
After I read all the amazing reviews on The XX after CMJ I had to check them out. And I have to say, they are pretty amazing.
The band hails from South West London and really lends a new vibe to the current music scene. I like how there are two lead singers in the band (Romy and Oliver) and even better than one of them is a girl. It gives the band a very original sound.
Their songs are somewhat melancholic but soothing. Even if you are not into the whole music hype I promise you will like them. Their self-titled album is such an easy listen, every song is great.
Their upcoming show at the Bowery Ballroom sold out but I got tickets to their Webster Hall show on 12/5 and I can't wait! If you've never heard them before, check out Crystalised. Romy's voice is so sexy!
